BFG Leader Pins Governor Abbott during NAWBO-SA Legislative Day
Business Financial Group President Lynn Weirich honored new Governor Greg Abbott with a Fiesta Medal during the first Legislative Day at the Texas Capital for the National Association of Women Business Owners-San Antonio chapter (NAWBO-SA) on Feb. 3. Governor Abbott had just unveiled a new initiative to make Texas the state that has the most women-owned businesses.
Weirich, the NAWBO-SA Director of Public Policy, led a group of 20 San Antonio business owners that included current organization President Nancy Victor of Help Me!! Tech Team and President-elect Cristina Heaney of U.S. Safety Services. The group met with state Representatives Lyle Larson and Carlos Ureste, as well as an aide to House Speaker Joe Strauss.
NAWBO-SA has joined the National Federation of Independent Business Owners in urging legislators to reform the state's franchise tax.
"The franchise tax calculation is applied to gross revenues and does not take into account the net profits," Weirich said. "This makes the tax inherently inequitable and consequently unfair."
Weirich, who is a past President and founding member of NAWBO-SA, said she came out of "NAWBO-SA retirement" to spearhead the effort because she is passionate about limiting health insurance mandates and other regulations that make it hard to grow businesses in the Lone Star State.
